Ford forced to recall 3 million cars due to airbag problem | Car

The American car manufacturer Ford has to recall three million cars from the American transport regulator NHTSA due to defective Takata aribags. The regulator on Tuesday rejected a request to avoid that recall.

Ford now has 30 days to work out a plan to notify affected owners and resolve the issue.

According to NHTSA, the Ranger, Fusion and Edge models built between 2006 and 2012 have been affected, as have certain types of the Lincoln and Mercury brands. Japanese car maker Mazda also has to recall 5,800 cars.

Both companies had appealed the recalls, claiming that the airbag defect does not pose an immediate danger to the drivers and passengers of the cars.

In November, the largest US carmaker General Motors also had to repair 5.9 million cars after NHTSA declined an appeal. That cost GM $ 1.2 billion.

Ford has not yet responded to the news.

Takata

Defective Takata airbags have been a problem in the automotive industry for years and have led to the largest rollback of cars ever. Some airbags deploy too easily and project pieces of metal through the cars. They have already been linked to 29 deaths and a fair amount of injuries.

The company has since been fined a billion dollars. The airbag debacle led to Takata’s bankruptcy in 2017.
