Force granny to build mall around her house

From 15 to 20 million pesos were allocated for the purchase of the place, which was not accepted by the woman.

United States.- There is no doubt about the tenacity of some people in the face of adversity. This was the case of a grandmother, who forced a shopping center to be built around her house, steadfastly refusing to sell her land.

The incident occurred in the capital of the United States, in Washington, where the woman refused on more than one occasion to give up the house she had shared with her mother since she was a child. And although the fact is not recent, the news was circulating again on social networks, going viral.

Edith Macefield, from Seattle, became a granny heroine, by not allowing a realtor to obtain her land, which was harshly offered. From 15 to 20 million pesos were allocated for the purchase of the place, which was not accepted by the woman.

The small house was purchased by his mother in 1970 for 70 thousand pesos. Her mother, Alice, was working as a store manager at the time, the Seattle Times reported.

Since then, the woman shared her whole life in that place, until the arrival of a real estate agent, who gradually took over the houses and the areas.

The property, 108 years old, was first offered by the company with 15 million pesos, however the grandmother did not accept it, declaring to die in the place where she grew up and shared valuable moments with her family.

The insistence was seen coming, and with it a second more generous offer of 20 million pesos. Not even this money could change the woman’s mind, who refused until the last moment to sell or vacate her home.

“I don’t want to move, I don’t need the money. Money means nothing, ”repeated its owner.

The pressures did not work, nor did the negotiations, leaving only one path for the construction company: Start the project around their house. That was how the grandmother forced an entire company to respect her home and draw new plans where her land was contemplated, without any modification.

The project manager, Barry Martin, stopped insisting on the mobilization of the old woman, he even became good friends with her, whom he visited frequently, shared food with her and even took her to the doctor for her routine check-ups. In fact, he was the one who kept her house after the death of her grandmother in 2008.

The resemblance of the house to the view in the Disney movie UP is no coincidence, in fact, it is known that this story was the one that inspired the mouse company to make an animated children’s movie, remembering this event.

Now, the property of the grandmother who forced a shopping center to be built around her house, continues in the same place without being able to be sold or auctioned, due to the multiple debts surrounding it. But that doesn’t matter, as long as people continue to decorate it with balloons and remember this fascinating anecdote.
