For the promotion of human rights, resilience, a culture of peace and non-violence among learners – The Sahel

Sharing is caring!

The Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of National Education, Mr. Hassane Hamza chaired, yesterday morning, the opening ceremony of the work of the workshop for the integration of education in the rule of law (EED) and the gender dimension in the guide prepared on the prevention of violent extremism through education (PEV-E). This workshop aims to integrate rule of law and gender education into the guide for teacher training on youth empowerment for resilience and prevention of violent extremism. The meeting brought together members of the national team, international experts, representatives of the ministries concerned by this issue as well as those of the National Center for Strategic and Security Studies (CNESS) and the High Authority for the Consolidation of peace (HACP).

This specifically involves identifying the content to be integrated, relating to education on the rule of law and gender for the different levels of basic cycles 1 and 2 and discussing the modalities for integrating the content. concepts and content relating to education for the rule of law, democracy and gender.

In his opening speech, the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of National Education indicated that education plays a key role in the promotion of human rights, the rule of law, justice and the promotion of ‘a culture of peace and non-violence. Indeed, education as a “soft power”, said Mr. Hassane Hamza, participates in the open-mindedness of learners, strengthens their resilience and promotes their commitment to peace and non-violence. . So he added, education therefore makes it possible to deal with ignorance and obscurantism, which are at the basis of certain ideologies and certain violent extremist acts. It also makes it possible to instill in young people virtues and

notions such as respect, justice or even empathy, thus promoting the development of capacities necessary for the construction of living together, social cohesion and peace.

It is in this sense, said Mr. Hassane Hamza, that education in the rule of law (EED) and the consideration of gender are complementary and inseparable elements of the prevention of violent extremism by education (PEV-E). And according to him, a correlation between women’s rights and a decrease in violent extremism is increasingly demonstrated. “Countries with relative gender equality are less prone to violent extremism. Women and young girls, very often victims of

violent extremism, have a decisive role to play in the prevention of violent extremism and are increasingly seen as carriers of initiatives and solutions ”, underlined the SGA of the Ministry of National Education.

It is therefore important to strengthen the guide developed on the prevention of violent extremism through education (PEV-E) by integrating these missing elements that are the gender dimension and education for the rule of law (EED ). Mr. Hassane Hamza said that a “national strategy for the prevention of radicalization and violent extremism” is available. And the PEV-E Sahel project contributes to the implementation of this national strategy by responding to the major challenges identified by Niger in the prevention of violent extremism through education.

By way of illustration, he asserted that some organizations and NGOs carry out activities related to education in the rule of law and the prevention of violent extremism through education (PEV-E), targeting adolescents. as part of second chance strategies and the mobile psychosocial support system for adolescents (DIAPADO). Added to this are all the ministries involved in the project as well as in the “national strategy for reducing the vulnerability of the education system” and Niger’s other partners working on similar or complementary themes who also carry out related activities. with education for the rule of law and the prevention of violent extremism through education (PEV-E).
