For the first time, treatment via app is fully reimbursed by health insurer

Treatment code

Until 2022, hospitals did not receive a full reimbursement if they helped their heart patients with a heart rhythm app using the Maastricht treatment method. Simply because there was no specific coding for this digital treatment method – also known as tele-guidance – in the health care system’s declaration system. Therefore, using the app was not financially attractive for hospitals.

Due to the agreement between VGZ and Maastricht UMC+, the supervisory authority NZa has now given permission to add a treatment code, so that hospitals do receive adequate compensation if their doctors use the heart rhythm app in a consultation.

“This is important,” says Nils van Herpen, innovation manager healthcare at VGZ. “Because other health insurers can now use our model to make similar agreements with hospitals themselves. They do not have to go through the entire process themselves to get permission, so this app can now be rolled out on a large scale.”
