Stéphane Richard, boss of Orange, relies heavily on the iPhone for the democratization of 5G in France.
During’an interview recently granted to Radio Classique, Stéphane Richard mentioned the allocation of 5G frequencies in France and the arrival of commercial offers. The Orange boss also talked about what will be necessary to enjoy 5G. For Stéphane Richard, “You have to wait until there is a minimum of network, of coverage therefore, and then especially of the terminals which allow to use it. And to add “That we will have to change terminals, and in particular we will have to wait for the new iPhone, probably rather towards the end of the year”. Relaunched on his sentence and the fact that “Samsung is ready”, the boss of Orange launched a figure: “In France, the iPhone is more than 40% of smartphone users”.
According to figures from Canalys, the French Top 5 is as follows: Samsung (43%), Huawei (17%), Apple (15%), Wiko (8%) and Xiaomi (8%). Speaking of 40%, Stéphane Richard probably had to think of the high-end segment, Apple’s favorite segment and on which 5G is mainly available today (but not for very long, in light of recent industry announcements ). No doubt he also wanted to emphasize the important lever that the apple company represents when it comes to democratizing a new technology. According to Counterpoint Research, the iPhone XR is indeed the best-selling smartphone in the world with 3% and its successor the iPhone 11 seems to follow the same path with a fifth place and 1.6%.
