For the 20th time, the world music festival Porta / Diena will take place

As already In the port as usual, Latvian voices and instruments will be played alongside guest artists. Sniedze Prauliņa will perform together with the Estonian duo Puuluup, uniting the loudest traditions of both nations, while Raimonds and Oskars Petrauski will perform together with Finnish multi – instrumentalist Maija Kauhanen.

Strong and expressive voice, kantele played by ancestors and imaginative percussion; instrumental virtuoso and one-man orchestra – this is Maija Kauhanen from Finland. The artist plays the Finnish kantele Saarijärviusing an ancient playing technique where the kantele is played with a small piece of wood that is used as a pick. Combining it with polyrhythmics and the natural nerve of rhythm, the musician creates unique landscapes of sound and mood.

Maija is a composer and versatile multi-instrumentalist, as well as a charismatic performer, an exciting and talented musician. Maija Kauhanen’s main source of inspiration is the musical traditions of Finnish and Karelian farmers, but she gives new life to her old melodies.

Musical association Puuluup is a duo from Estonia – Ramo Teders and Marko Weisons. Their first album Light my snow was released in May 2018 – a rebirth of a little surrealism, modern folklore and the ancient instrument talharp!

Puuluup long – forgotten and modern in creativity holds together like water and snow. Talharpa represents Estonian traditions and folklore. The duo’s characteristic sound is created with the help of various modern music technologies – electronics and looping techniques. Both poetry and melodies are a mix of musical memories and improvisation. Inspiration for the creation of new works often comes from the legends of the island of Worms, from the Finnish jouhikko repertoire, the Sahel blues, chastuškas and traditional music of other nations. Various random sources of inspiration – excerpts from Polish series, an old Estonian punk and also sweet and sourdough bread from the island of Worms – are recognized by both musicians as equally important. When giving concerts in person, Puuluup enriches his performances with the choreographic brilliance created by the long rehearsals.
