Wigan announced insolvency less than a month after the club was taken over by a consortium led by Hong Kong businessman Au Yeung Wai Kay.

Currently, the fourteenth team of the table will be deducted 12 points at the end of the season if they do not figure in one of the three relegation positions. If he descends on the basis of his results, he will be deducted points in the next year. Wigan has an eight-point lead to the relegation zone six laps before the end.

“Our immediate goal is to ensure that the club plays all the remaining matches and to find a candidate to save Wigan Athletic and the jobs of the people who work for it,” said Begbies Traynor, which was in charge of managing the club. “It is clear that the end of the season due to covid-19 had a significant impact on the club,” she added.

Wigan played in the Premier League for eight years until the relegation in 2013, in which he also unexpectedly won the FA Cup. Two years later, the club even dropped to the third league, but returned to the second highest competition immediately after the following season.
