Football, Morten Thorsby | Thorsby changes number in Sampdoria

Norway’s national team player Morten Thorsby again succeeds in gaining attention around climate change.

Morten Thorsby has decided to replace number 18 with number 2 in Italian Sampdoria.

He does this to draw attention to climate change. The number two represents the goal of the Paris Agreement, which is that the temperature of the earth must not rise by as much as two degrees Celsius.

A total of 200 countries have agreed on this, and Thorsby wants to spread the message to football supporters as well.

Struggled to find meaning in life

In the podcast Bropod, the former Stabæk player talks about how he previously had problems finding meaning in life through football.

– Finding meaning is something I struggled with as a teenager. I had to perform on the football field, but for me nothing made sense. I wanted to be better than everyone else, but at the same time I had a side of me that said “what are you doing? There is a huge climate crisis going on and you are playing football ». It does not make sense, says Thorsby in the podcast.

– It got to a point where I was not sure if I wanted to play football anymore. I talked to my parents, and we came to the conclusion that I should spend my life fighting for what was important. The best thing I can do is get as good at football as possible and keep talking about these important topics.

Gets a lot of attention

Media in England, Italy and the USA, among others, have covered Thorsby’s number change in recent days.

Thorsby and Sampdoria kick off the season with the Coppa Italia match against Alessandria on Monday.

The start of the series will not be played until Monday 23 August, when AC Milan visit Genoa.
