Christian Constantin, once again you surprised everyone by calling Paolo Tramezzani.
The reasons are however simple and logical. For me, it is obvious that we will suffer this summer and to get out of it I had to mount a “commando operation”. And for her to have a good chance of succeeding, I needed an operational trainer right away. Because here we are really in an emergency.
That is to say?
A trainer who already knows Swiss football and FC Sion well. In our context, it would have been dangerous to entrust this position to a technician who would have needed some adaptation time. Paolo’s advantage is that he’s been here before. He knows the house and therefore does not land in an unknown universe.
Three years ago, when he first came to Sion, he disappointed you, didn’t he?
It is true, the results had not lived up to our expectations but, frankly, he also had some extenuating circumstances at the time. His wife’s heavy illness had weighed heavily on him. But it is clear that the two eliminations against Suduva in the Europa League and Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy in the Swiss Cup remain two real spots that he now has the opportunity to erase.
Do you seem to have changed in the last three years?
Yes and no. On the one hand, I think that this negative experience in Sion allowed him to accumulate a good additional experience. I’m sure he won’t make the same mistakes again, especially in his communication with the players and with the club’s management. Otherwise, I found in him the same desire and the same motivation as at the time. Paolo also, and above all, remained the same great competitor as three years ago who was given the opportunity to redeem himself after his first failed pass. He feels that he owes us something.
His contract covers only two months. Does that mean he’s not sure who will lead the team in August for the Cup?
No no, he will remain until the end of this season, including the Cup matches.
Have you met other candidates?
Yes, there were of course a few others. Including Mécha Bazdarevic. He is a remarkable man and an excellent coach who had all the qualities required to succeed Dionisio, but not this knowledge of Swiss football which remains to me a real necessity in view of the situation in which we find ourselves today. It would probably have taken six weeks for Mécha to fully understand our championship and the way FC Sion works and players it does not know. Too much for our “commando operation”.
Is maintenance therefore the one and only objective set?
At first, yes. And to get there, there is nothing more than points. Great speeches are useless. The only thing that interests me today is what’s going to happen on the ground.
