Flu More Deadly than Covid-19

A recent analysis in English found that flu more deadly than Covid-19. The flu death rate was found to be higher than that of Covid-19.

This is allegedly due to the high level of immunity as a result of the vaccination program and the decreased severity of the disease caused by the corona virus that causes COVID-19, the Omicron variant.

This analysis was performed by Financial Times using official data held by the British government. Data shows that the number of people who have died from Covid-19 has fallen amid the current flu season. This decline is even said to be the first during the pandemic.

Data shows that there have been around 35 deaths out of 100,000 Covid-19 cases in the UK. With the same number of cases, the flu was found to have caused about 40 deaths.

Similar data were also found in the elderly group over the age of 80. The mortality rate from Omicron was found to be lower than the flu.

“Is Omicron the same as the flu? No. But vaccines have made the risks in each individual very similar,” said a senior epidemiologist researcher from Cambridge University.

Not only that, this analysis of the flu being deadlier than Covid-19 also found that comorbid groups still need to be a concern.

After declining over the past two months since the peak of the Omicron wave, UK hospital occupancy rates have again increased by 21 per cent. However, about two-fifths of Covid-19 patients admitted to hospitals are those with comorbidities.

However, this does not mean that the British public can breathe a sigh of relief from Covid-19. Senior researcher from University College London, Christina Pagel said, the rapid transmission of Omicron can not be equated with the flu. Mainly, because the BA.2 variant which is 30 per cent more infectious than the previous variant was found to be more dominant in the UK.

With that, even though the data shows that the flu is more deadly than Covid-19, the public is asked to remain cautious. Especially when the government has relaxed some health protocol rules.
