Flu, gastro: what you need to know about the overseas departments

Gastro is raging in the overseas departments and the flu epidemic remains stable.

Health watch experts noted a decrease in influenza activity in Mayotte. The number of people admitted to the emergency room for registered influenza-like illness rose from 7% to 5% at the beginning of January. Guyana and Reunion are less affected by this flu episode, unlike Guadeloupe and Saint Barthélemy which is going into the pre-epidemic phase, according to Santé Publique France.

One epidemic can hide another

If the progression of the flu remains moderate, this is not the case for gastroenteritis. Many cases of acute form of the disease have been identified in Guadeloupe and Martinique. According to public health France, since the start of the epidemic in early December, 5,300 consultations for acute gastroenteritis have been estimated in hospitals throughout the territory of Guadeloupe.

Nearly 2,000 people consulted a general practitioner in Martinique. This large number of consultations led to a strong mobilization of health personnel, underlines Santé Publique France.

What to do to remedy it:

Hygienic measures are recommended to limit the spread of the epidemic.
Avoid physical contact.
Wash your hands regularly
Clean the places at risk of transmissions.
