Floods in southern Brazil leave at least 195 dead and 69 missing

MADRID, 23 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The floods in the mountainous municipality of Petrópolis, in southern Brazil, have already left at least 195 dead and 69 missing, surpassing the figures of the largest catastrophe suffered by the Brazilian city of Serra Fluminense in 1988.

This new balance has been released a week after the landslide caused by the accumulation of torrential waters in Petrópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, which devastated large areas of the town.

The Military Firefighters Corps of Rio de Janeiro and the Civil Police have released a new list on Tuesday with the identification of part of the deceased, 24 more than in the count on Sunday. The registry of missing persons has dropped from 165 to 69 in the last update, as ‘O Globo’ has learned.

Search tasks have been reinforced with new crews of firefighters from other Brazilian states, who also have 36 sniffer dogs to find the missing victims, as reported by Agencia Brasil.

The greatest flood tragedy recorded in the area occurred on February 5, 1988 in the Brazilian municipality of Serra Fluminense and left 171 dead.

The authorities have already cataloged the rains as “the worst recorded in a century”, and have been concerned about the possibility of new landslides, since the weather forecast predicts more rains this weekend, as explained by the Agencia Brazil.

There is also concern about the transmission of diseases, so the Brazilian Department of Health recommended that citizens who had contact with the flood water or who had skin lesions, be aware of possible symptoms.
