Flight Cancellations and Delays Disrupt Travel at Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia Airports

At Newark Airport there are at least 350 cancellations and 112 delays. At John F. Kennedy International Airport, about 68 canceled flights and 196 flights are delayed. At LaGuardia Airport there are 134 canceled flights and 77 delays.

Rebecca Vizcaíno, a passenger who left the Dominican Republic, recounts that it took her two days to get to New York. “I’ve been up since 4 in the morning, awake, hungry, having a bad night. For what? So that today they delay us again. I’ve been at the airport all day,” she says.

The most affected air terminal is the Newark International Airport, most of the cancellations are from the Delta airline.

Through its social media accounts, the air terminal attributed the cancellations to weather conditions.

Weather conditions caused disruptions at Newark airport, check with your airline for the status of your flight,” they said in a tweet.

Precipitation and wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour are expected to continue through today in the area from New York and Connecticut to South Carolina.

Storms are expected in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and North Carolina

The National Weather Service warned Widespread clusters of showers and thunderstorms over parts of New York state, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina.

“The hazards associated with these thunderstorms are frequent lightning, strong gusts of thunderstorm winds, hail, and a minimal threat of tornadoes,” the weather service said.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said Monday that “severe weather is expected across the state this week, bringing persistent rain showers, thunderstorms and the potential to cause flash flooding.”

“Our state agencies are preparing emergency response assets and we are in close contact with local governments across the state to ensure they are prepared,” Hochul added. “I encourage all New Yorkers to monitor their local weather forecasts, pay attention to alerts, and plan accordingly.”

In total, airlines have canceled more than 1,400 flights, with New York, Boston and Atlanta airports being the most affected.
