Flemish government also imposes energy-saving measures on non-energy-intensive companies | Inland

Energy-saving measures have been in place for energy-intensive companies for some time. The Flemish government is now extending that line to around 1,000 non-energy-intensive companies. According to Minister Demir, there is still “considerable savings potential”.

Companies with an energy consumption between 0.03 and 0.1 Petajoules per year will be asked to perform energy audits or draw up energy balances. The aim is for companies to realize their energy-saving potential in a cost-efficient manner. Companies in the category with an energy consumption of 0.05 to 0.1PJ will be obliged to implement cost-effective measures.

This stricter approach with obligations is necessary, believes Minister Demir. The focus of these companies is not always on taking energy-saving measures. “By imposing achievable obligations on the sector, the Flemish government wants to make faster progress,” says Demir. “This reinforced regulation also meets the European obligation to develop specific actions aimed at the energy use of SMEs. We are now discussing the proposals with the various stakeholders.”
