Five women sue Bill Cosby under new law on survivors of sexual assault

Five women, including two former ‘The Cosby Show’ actresses, have filed a lawsuit against comedian and actor Bill Cosby, alleging sexual assault and abuse in various events that took place in different years, going back to 1969.

The women filed suit. Under New York law, Adult Survivors Actwhich came into force in November and which allows victims of sexual abuse to sue their abusers, even after the maximum period within which legal action can be brought has expired.

Accused and released

In 2014 and 2015, more than 50 women came forward with similar allegations that Cosby drugged, assaulted, and then used his wealth and status in the entertainment industry to silence them.

  • Cosby, who denied any wrongdoing, was convicted of sexual assault in 2018 and sentenced to between 3 and 10 years in prison.
  • In 2021, he was released after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that his due process rights had been violated.

The new question

The 34-page lawsuit was filed by actresses Lili Bernard and Eden Tirl, as well as Jewel Gittens, Jennifer Thompson and Cindra Ladd.

  • The document cites Cosby and the media companies NBCUniversal Media, Kaufman Astoria Studios and The Carsey-Werner Company, which together ran “The Cosby Show” from 1984 to 1992, as defendants. CNN reviewed.
  • Cosby is accused of harassment, assault, infliction of emotional distress and false imprisonment and accuses the media companies of malpractice. The women discussed events that occurred in 1969, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991.
  • In a statement, Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt called the lawsuit “frivolous” and denied the allegations.

New York’s new law to sue is like a “window” that will give victims of sexual assault more time to seek resources, said Jane Manning, a former sex crimes prosecutor.

Among the first lawsuits filed as soon as the law went into effect on Thursday, Nov. 24, was that of writer and journalist E. Jean Carroll, seeking to hold former President Donald Trump accountable for allegedly violating it in the 1990s. 90. Trump has denied the allegations.
