The season’s end spurt in front of the chest, the Champions League in view: On Saturday evening there will be the groundbreaking top game between Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt. BVB wants to catch up with fourth-placed Hessen from 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, the SGE could expand their lead over the black and yellow pursuer with an away win. bundesliga.de explains what speaks for the Terzic team in the duel on matchday 27.
1) Dortmund meets a welcome guest
When Eintracht Frankfurt has to play against Borussia Dortmund, there has usually been little that can be counted recently. For nine competitive games (eight of them in the Bundesliga, one in the DFB-Pokal) Frankfurt has been without any victory against BVB. There is currently no other club in the Bundesliga in such a long series without a threesome.

But especially at their home Signal Iduna Park, Eintracht has recently been a very welcome guest for Dortmund: BVB has won all of the last nine home games against Hessen. This was particularly clear in the last duel in Dortmund, where BVB deservedly triumphed 4-0 after 17-1 shots on goal. But it becomes even clearer: in the last 29 years, BVB only lost once at home to Frankfurt. And this defeat was also more than eleven years ago.
2) Haaland can hardly be stopped
The biggest challenge for the Frankfurt offensive will undoubtedly be to stop Erling Haaland. Lately, however, many defenders have broken their teeth on this project. The Norwegian – just like Andre Silva – has 21 goals this season, but has three games fewer than his Frankfurt counterpart due to injury. On average, Haaland hits the opposing goal every 85 minutes.

This was also the case on the previous match day, when the Norwegian saved his team with two goals against 1. FC Köln from a late point. It was already his eighth double in a Bundesliga season – so far only Lothar Emmerich had managed that at BVB (1965/66 and 1966/67). The current form also speaks for the 20-year-old: In the last eight competitive games he has scored eleven times (seven goals in the Bundesliga, four in the Champions League).

3) BVB difficult to calculate
The match plan that Frankfurt coach Adi Hütter thinks about, especially when playing against the ball, is likely to be one of the more complex. After all, it’s not so easy these days to grab Borussia Dortmund’s offensive game. Edin Terzic’s team is putting a lot of pressure forward, both quantitatively and qualitatively. With 373 shots on goal, BVB is the most active team in this statistic after Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig and also has significantly more deals than Frankfurt (337)

Nevertheless, the offensive efforts are relatively often crowned with success. Only league leaders Bayern have more than 54 Dortmund goals this season. BVB is also in second place in terms of efficiency (seven shots on goal for one goal). And if Erling Haaland should be taken out of the game, his teammates will also show that they know where the goal is: Dortmund already has 16 different goalscorers this season – top league value!
4) Terzic still unbeaten at home
For a long time, BVB was considered a home power, but had lost this status at the beginning of this season under Lucien Favre. But although there are currently no spectators and the imposing “yellow wall” cannot inspire the players these days, Dortmund has found its home strength again under Edin Terzic.

Since the 1: 5 against Stuttgart on December 12th, after Lucien Favre was released, BVB has not lost in their own stadium. In the eight home games under Terzic across all competitions, there were five wins and three draws (including four wins and two draws in the Bundesliga).

5) Promising returnees
Most recently, Borussia Dortmund had to do without some key players. Above all Jadon Sancho. The difference player on the offensive outside will not yet be available against Frankfurt, but the chances are currently very good that Raphael Guerreiro will return. The left-back is something like BVB’s secret playmaker and was directly involved in eleven goals in his 20 Bundesliga appearances in 2020/21 (three goals, eight assists). An outstanding rate for a defender.
In addition to Guerreiro, Marco Reus and Mateu Morey should also be fully integrated into team training this week. Before he got a blow on the kettle in the game against Hertha, Reus drew attention to himself most recently as a goal setter and was getting closer and closer to his former top form. The young Morey, on the other hand, had earned a regular place on the right defensive side and shone both in the defensive game and with playful solutions forward.
