Heracles Almelo has the fittest squad in the world Eredivisie, the statistics show. Frank Wormuth is happy with it, but at the same time also puts things into perspective.
“Of course that’s positive and our goal is to be very fit,” Wormuth responds to TC/Tubantia. “But we are hesitant, because it is not only positive. Take Ajax, they are so much better at the ball than we are. We have a lot of ball loss and have to bridge more meters to recapture the ball.”
“To play a role in the Eredivisie as a smaller team, it is important to be able to do a lot physically. AZ was my example at the time, they were the fittest team. Six months ago I spoke to a player from AZ, who said that the trainer Heracles I took that as an example. I thought that was a compliment, really nice to hear.”
Wormuth demands a lot from his players. Summer reinforcement Bilal Basacikoglu (ex-Feyenoord and Trabzonspor) also noticed that. “Bilal came to me and said he really had to get used to the high intensity. That’s what all new players say, some take four to eight months to hook up.”
