US Secretary of State Pompeo will visit Suriname later this week. Media in the country announced this and the Surinamese Minister of Foreign Affairs confirms it to the ANP.
It is the first time that a US Secretary of State has visited the country. Minister Ramdin tells the ANP that he sees the meeting as a sign of American confidence in the new government of President Santokhi.
Pompeo’s short visit to Suriname is part of a multi-day trip through South America. He also visits Guyana. Earlier this year, Pompeo said he was already following the elections in both countries closely.
