In the DFB Cup, the first rounds are often big versus small. But the luck of the draw also brought the fans some regional derbies this year.
On Saturday (August 7th) from 3:30 p.m. you will see the cup conference live on Sky Sport 1 and Sky Sport 1 HD on TV. You can join the party as a stream via Sky Ticket or Sky Go.
The derbies in the DFB Cup
In the Baltic Derby, SC Weiche Flensburg 08 (Regionalliga Nord) and Holstein Kiel (2nd division) meet. Most recently, the two teams faced each other in a competitive match in 2012. Kiel won the Regionalliga-Nord game 2-0.
Osnabrück and Bremen are a good 120 kilometers apart, and a whole league separates them in football. Third division VfL Osnabrück welcomes second division Werder Bremen to their 38th competitive game. The last one was a while ago: In the 1980/81 season Werder won both games in the second division north against VfL.
Wuppertaler SV (Regionalliga West) and VfL Bochum (Bundesliga) have met ten times so far, the last time in the 1993/94 second division. Wuppertal won 3-1 at the time, but was relegated from the second division in the end.
Big versus small
SV Wehen Wiesbaden (3rd division) welcomes defending champions Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga). In the cup, this match took place 21 years ago: At that time Heiko Herrlich redeemed BVB in extra time and Dortmund moved into the third cup round thanks to his goal to make it 1-0.
1. FC Lok Leipzig (Regionalliga Nordost) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (Bundesliga) last faced each other in the Bundesliga in the 1993/94 season. At that time, VfB Leipzig had just been promoted to the Bundesliga. However, the Saxons said goodbye to the lower classes after the season as bottom of the table. Leipzig achieved only three victories at the time, none of them against Leverkusen.
SSV Ulm (Regionalliga Südwest) and 1. FC Nürnberg (2. Bundesliga) meet for the 20th time. Among the 19 games so far, there are also three encounters in the first round of the cup, including the last competitive game between the two. In August 2001 the Ulmer Spatzen won 2-1 against the clubbers.
Eintracht Norderstedt (Regionalliga Nord) and Hannover 96 (2nd Bundesliga) have met four times so far. Hannover won all games, most recently in 1997 6-3. Greifswalder FC (Oberliga Nordost-Nord) and FC Augsburg (Bundesliga), on the other hand, have never faced each other and are celebrating their competitive premiere.
