First local ice day of the autumn measured in Gelders Hupsel | NOW

The first local ice day of autumn was measured on Thursday, reports Weather Plaza. In Hupsel, a hamlet in Gelderland, the temperature remained below 0 for 24 hours with a maximum of -0.2 degrees.

When the maximum temperature remains below 0 for a 24-hour period, it is an ice day. If it freezes somewhere in a day, but the maximum temperature is higher or equal to 0 degrees, we speak of a frost day. To speak of a national ice cream day, it has to freeze for 24 hours in De Bilt.

The last local ice day in the Netherlands was measured on January 21, when the mercury in the Limburg village of Ell remained at -0.1 degrees. That was also the only time during the previous winter that the temperature somewhere in the country did not rise above 0 degrees for 24 hours.

Also in the winter season of 1974/1975 there was only one local ice day. Since the measurements began in 1901, it has never happened that not a single local ice day was measured in the Netherlands.

Most local ice days were measured in the winter of 1962/1963. Then on 68 different days somewhere in the country it came to an ice day. Most ice days at one measuring point in one winter season were measured in the Drenthe town of Eelde. In the winter of 1946/1947, no fewer than 61 ice days were measured there.

On average, about eight ice days per winter season occur in the center of our country. Local ice days normally occur between November and the end of March.
