First hands-on photos of MagSafe Charger and covers

The MagSafe Charger is one of the new accessories available Apple is going to release this fall. The first devices will be on the market this Friday, but Filip Chudzinski, creator of the Bandwidth app (more info), already bought a charger at the Apple Store in Hamburg and took these beautiful photos. He also bought the silicone case, which has a ring-shaped pattern on the inside, where the MagSafe magnets are. Also new is that the bottom of the case is now closed, except for a small recess for the Lightning cable.

The pictures show:

Both are currently available for pick-up at the Dutch Apple Stores.

In addition, Apple sells:

The adapter is already available in the physical Apple Stores, the leather case is not yet.

MagSafe Charger has 1 meter cable

What the MagSafe Charger concerns: it has a cable length of 1 meter and a diameter of 55mm. It weighs about 40 grams. There are still many questions about this MagSafe charger, such as: how strong are the magnets and should you position the charger exactly with the cable facing the bottom?

Filip has an answer to the first question: the cover can be glued to the fridge and if you have one iPhone in stops it will probably also hang (although it is not recommended if you hit the door hard). It is not yet possible to say how you should position the cable, since no one iPhone 12 holds.

Another question we saw on Twitter is whether you always need a MagSafe case to load. That is not the case. But what you do need is a power adapter. Preferably the 20 Watt one we mentioned above, but less powerful USB-C adapters and the USB-C port in your MacBook undoubtedly work too. Only then you will not get the power (and therefore not the charging speed) of 15 Watt.

Another Twitterer reports, which also gives the MagSafe Charger a slight adhesive effect on the iPhone 11 Pro, where the coils are for wireless charging located. However, those earlier iPhones do not have a ring of magnets, so it does not grip properly. Another aspect to consider is that a magnetic charger sticks to your phone. Taking a sleepy head off the charger in the morning, as you might do now, is no longer an option. You will need to use two hands to complete the iPhone and MagSafe Charger.

The MagSafe Charger comes in a fold-out package, with the charging puck on one side and a coiled cable (which is 1 meter long as mentioned before) on the other. Via Instagram we got another question: whether the magnetic charger causes scratches on the back in the long term. That is difficult to say, since no one has used the charger for a longer term yet. It is true that many charging boards have a rubber-like coating, while Apple’s magnetic charger has an aluminum ring. If you are afraid of scratches, it is better to stick a plastic foil on the back.
