The supply of energy in the coming winter affects many countries. Switzerland is also preparing for a possible blackout and wants to allow driving bans for electric cars, among other things.
Switzerland could be the first country in the world to impose driving bans on electric cars in an emergency to ensure energy security. This was unanimously reported by various press organs which refer to a draft regulation on the restrictions and bans on the use of electricity.
Specifically, this newspaper wrote: ‘Private use of electric cars is permitted only for absolutely necessary trips, such as professional practice, shopping, medical visits, etc. In these cases, the maximum speed on motorways would be reduced.”

Switzerland gets most of its electricity from hydroelectricity. However, the country also imports electricity from Germany and France. In the event of bottlenecks, electricity could also become scarce in Switzerland. Energy security in Europe is seen as threatened by the war in Ukraine. Many countries are therefore preparing for an emergency.
According to the draft, the restrictions in electric mobility are only intended for escalation level 3. For this, the austerity measures would come into force in private households. Washing machines, for example, can only run at a maximum of 40 degrees. Leaf blowers, patio heaters, heated seats in chair lifts cannot be operated.

The Netherlands does not yet have a comprehensive contingency plan in case the electricity supply falters or fails completely.
