First charging station for electric vehicles on the A2

The first rapid charging station (SRR) for electric vehicles on a rest area of national roads was inaugurated on Friday on the A2 near Eich (LU). In the next ten years, 99 rest areas will be equipped with SRR.

Ultimately, 160 repro and feeding areas will be equipped with SRR on the entire national road network, the Federal Roads Office (Ofrou) said on Friday. Electric vehicle drivers will therefore have 600 charging points. The rest area ‘Inseli’ on the A2, near Eich (LU), is the first.

The equipment of rest areas in SRR is a measure of the Confederation’s roadmap for electric mobility 2022. It was signed at the end of 2018 by the Confederation and representatives of the cantons, cities and sectors of electricity and mobility.

Promote electric mobility

The objective is to promote electric mobility. Charging infrastructure is essential for the continued spread of electric vehicles, says Offrou.

These stations must be designed in a ‘non-discriminatory’ manner with regard to the types of vehicles. They must allow recharging of vehicles with different types of connectors.

At the end of 2019, the share of electric vehicles (28,716 vehicles) in the entire fleet (6,160,262) was 0.6%. In that year, the number of electric cars among the new registrations more than doubled.
