Düsseldorf. Patients with lung, respiratory or thoracic diseases who have to undergo an operation are in good hands at Florence Nightingale Hospital. The Clinic for Thoracic Surgery at the Florence Nightingale Hospital is the first clinic in Düsseldorf that has now been recognized by the German Society for Thoracic Surgery (DGT) as a “certified competence center for thoracic surgery”. With this, the professional association certifies the clinic’s high quality and great expertise.

More than 8,000 patients with lung diseases are treated annually at the Florence Nightingale Hospital. Anyone who has to undergo surgery can expect optimal care on the basis of standardized and excellent processes and extensive expertise at the Clinic for Thoracic Surgery. The highly specialized department of the Florence Nightingale Hospital is one of the seven North Rhine-Westphalia and 18 nationwide centers of excellence that are certified by the German Society for Thoracic Surgery. In 2020 chief physician Prof. Dr. med. Corinna Ludwig and her team more than 400 patients: operated on the inside of the lungs, the respiratory organs or the chest.

This year, the clinic applied for certification as a competence center for thoracic surgery for the first time and thus subjected it to an intensive quality check. In order to receive the award, she had to prove the quality of the structure, process and results in an audit. In their report, the auditors praise the well-founded and thorough preparation and the fact that the figures and data presented were transparent and comprehensible.

Auditors praise interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation

“In particular, the auditors emphasize the interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation, which results in a high quality of patient care and the quality of medical results. The report confirms that our clinic is continuously developing, ”says Head Physician Prof. Ludwig, who, together with her team, has been providing specialist medical care around the clock since September 2015.

As early as 2017, the Clinic for Thoracic Surgery and the Clinic for Pneumology were the first lung cancer center in Düsseldorf to be certified by the German Cancer Society (DKG). This award attests to the high standards in the medical treatment and care of lung cancer patients.

Use of gentle and innovative treatment methods

In the Clinic for Thoracic Surgery, people with inflammatory, benign and malignant diseases of the lungs, the bronchi (airways), the pleura, the median membrane and the diaphragm are treated surgically. Whenever possible, gentle surgical methods such as the minimally invasive “keyhole technique”, the parenchymal-saving cuff resection or the segment resection are used in the treatment. Thoracic surgeons work closely with experts in pulmonology, oncology, psycho-oncology, radiation therapy and pathology in order to provide patients with a malignant disease such as lung cancer, thymic cancer or lung metastases with the best possible care. The treatment concept is determined in an interdisciplinary tumor conference.
