Valentina’s story arrived at the Portuguese home in May when her father, Sandro Bernardo, reported the girl’s disappearance. There followed days of searches in Atouguia da Baleia, where Valentina was living temporarily with her father and a twist that rocked the country: Valentina died the victim of a heinous crime at the hands of her father and stepmother, Márcia.
New data now account for the hours of terror experienced by the nine-year-old girl. An autopsy performed on the girl’s body reveals that the first assault was so violent that it led to the detachment of the skull. Hours of agony followed.
