Fireworks Sales Start: Special Permits and Restrictions for New Year’s Eve 2023

Dec 28, 2023 at 8:24 AM Update: 9 minutes ago

Fireworks sales start on Thursday. Shops with a special permit are allowed to sell fireworks for three days from today. You can no longer buy fireworks on December 31, because New Year’s Eve falls on a Sunday this year.

Online fireworks sales started in mid-November. So far, people seem to be buying as many fireworks as they did last year. For example, last Friday, according to the fireworks industry, almost as many fireworks were sold online as in the same period last year.

In 2022, the industry reached a record turnover of 110 million euros. In the two years before that, there was a national fireworks ban due to corona. The government did not want to burden healthcare further. Every year people are injured by fireworks. Hands and eyes in particular bear the brunt.

Shops that sell fireworks are required to provide free safety goggles and a lighter fuse with the purchased fireworks.

Fewer points of sale, but at ‘fireworks ban locations’

This year, just like last year, there are fewer retailers selling fireworks. Fireworks will be sold in 918 places this year. In 2019, there were still 1,387 points of sale, it reports AD.

The newspaper has requested figures from all 29 regional environmental services that are responsible for supervision. It is noticeable that there are also points of sale in places where a fireworks ban applies. Of the sixteen places with a ban on cutting, only Heemstede no longer has a sales point.

In places where there is no fireworks ban, fireworks may only be lit on December 31 between 6:00 PM and 2:00 AM. Sparklers, fountains and snap peas may be sold and cut off all year round.
