Some should leave their homes immediately and get to safety on a sports ground.
A fire was burning in the south of Canberra Airport, for which an emergency had been declared. The fire started on Wednesday. Grassy areas on both sides of the airport caught fire. There was also strong wind and heat of more than 40 degrees. According to the airport, the terminal did not have to be evacuated. Another fire broke out nearby on Thursday, which was subject to a lower warning level (“watch and act”). Canberra Airport is used more for domestic flights. Australia’s main hub is Sydney.
The Canberra fire department (around 390,000 inhabitants) warned that the fire was dangerous for everyone. For many people it is too late to leave the area, they should look for a safe place. Driving is extremely dangerous and can be fatal.
