At least 19 people were killed in a major fire in a high-rise apartment building in New York. 63 other people were injured in the fire in the Bronx on Sunday, some of them life-threatening, said Mayor Eric Adams. US media reported, citing the mayor’s office, that nine children and young people were among the fatalities. The cause of the fire is still unclear.
The fire broke out in the morning in the lower part of the 19-story building. Adams, who had only taken office at the beginning of the year, spoke on television of “terrible” casualties and “one of the worst fires” in the history of the city. “There have been children who have been injured and some children have lost their lives,” said Adams. It looks like smoke has spread quickly in the building. Many injuries are likely to be due to smoke inhalation. The door to the burning apartment on one of the lower floors was open. This allowed the smoke to spread quickly in the house.
