Fire in locomotive freight train near Oisterwijk, train traffic obstructed

In the center of Oisterwijk this afternoon there was a fire in the locomotive of a freight train. The train was carrying benzene, a combustible substance.

The fire has not come near the wagons with benzene, a spokesperson for ProRail said. As far as is known, the fire only raged in the locomotive’s technical room.

One blow and then smoke

At around 2.30 pm, the train driver felt a bang and then saw smoke in the locomotive. According to the spokesman, he then immediately stopped the train and switched off the overhead contact line. In the end it turned out to be “a very small fire”, which was quickly extinguished. What started the fire is not yet known.

The train was on its way to the port in the Botlek area in Rotterdam and could not continue after the fire. The vehicle is taken off the track with an auxiliary locomotive.

Between Tilburg and Boxtel probably no trains will run until 6 p.m. Travelers can use buses between Tilburg Oisterwijk and Boxtel, the Dutch Railways reports.
