Fire at Brooklyn Synagogue: Two Seriously Injured, Five Hospitalized

NEW YORK — Two people were seriously injured in a fire that broke out at a Brooklyn synagogue early Friday, trapping people on the third floor as firefighters rushed a flatbed vehicle to help them get to safety.

Firefighters responded to an alarm at the mixed-occupancy building on 60th Street near 19th Avenue shortly before 6:30 a.m. and found heavy smoke upon arrival. A synagogue occupies the first two floors. At the top there is an apartment.

Firefighters confirmed that it appears the fire started in a second-floor kitchen, and although the flames were largely contained there, the smoke spread quickly. Three people had to be helped from a third-floor window, authorities said.

It was unclear if that trio included the two who were seriously injured. A total of five people were taken to hospitals. No details were immediately available about the victims.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
