Financial Difficulties in New York City Due to Influx of Asylum Seekers

Jakarta

Mayor New York City, Eric Adams expresses concern over the financial difficulties his city is facing when thousands asylum seekers keep coming every month. Many of the asylum seekers were sent in by Republican governors after crossing the southern border region United States of America.

“This problem is going to destroy New York City,” the Democratic mayor said at a public meeting, where he answered questions from residents Wednesday (6/9) evening local time.

Adams said 10,000 migrants arrive each month “from around the world” and 110,000 have arrived since Greg Abbott, the Republican governor of Texas, began sending migrants to New York by bus.

“We have to feed, clothe, house, educate the children, wash their clothes, give them everything they need, healthcare,” he said, quoted by news agencies. AFPFriday (8/9/2023).

In addition to New York, Abbott has sent migrants to other Democratic-led cities, including Washington and Los Angeles.

Other Republican governors, and some Democratic governors, have followed suit and started sending migrants out of their jurisdictions.

Sending migrants to Democrats has become a political tool for the American right as a way to criticize President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, which they say have allowed large numbers of undocumented migrants to cross the border with Mexico.

But city leaders say their support systems are not yet designed to accept large numbers of migrants.

Adams, last month estimated that providing support services to the migrant that comes in, it would take US$12 billion over three years.

“New Yorkers’ compassion may be limitless, but our resources are limitless,” he said in early August.
