Financial assistance to Ukraine from the EU – Germany slows down the provision of 9 billion euros

According to the newspaper, the allocation of funds is not approved by German Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who is against providing assistance to Ukraine through a common European debt, as was already the case during the pandemic.

Now the German minister has only approved the first tranche in the amount of 1 billion, the funds from which should be paid to Ukraine by the end of July.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine they declare the need to provide assistance in the amount of $5 billion a month. According to the newspaper, this is due to the fact that in September Ukraine risks not paying its external debt in the amount of 900 million euros.

As suggested by the publication, the issue of blocking financial aid could be one of the reasons dismissal by President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk.

Thus, the European Commission proposed a package of assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 9 billion euros in the spring, then it was approved by the leaders of the EU member states.

The package provided for a loan to Kyiv with a maturity of 25 years and without interest, thanks to the funds that the Commission itself would collect by issuing debt obligations on the market under the guarantees of European states.

But Germany, as one of the largest guarantors of this form of Eurobonds, opposes it.

Remember July 7th The European Parliament supported the provision of European macro-financial assistance to Ukraine for 1 billion euros.

In addition, the other day Ukraine received a German grant of 1 billion euros.
