Zamalek coach Patrice Carteron said that Mamelodi Sun Downs’ victory over Al-Ahly last season in the CAF Champions League with five goals without a response would not give him any advantage in the upcoming confrontation between them in light of the improvement of the red team.
Sun Downs will visit Al-Ahly to meet him next Saturday in the Champions League quarter-final away.
“I don’t think the five-season Sun Downs last season will give him any advantage against Al-Ahly, who seems to be becoming the strongest this season,” Carteron told South Africa’s Kake Off site.
“Al-Ahly has a very good team, and the meeting may have a revenge nature, they know their opponent better now.”
The French coach, who previously supervised Al-Ahly’s training, moved to talk about the chances of the teams in the Champions League quarter-finals about their chances of winning the title.
The French coach said: “I think the matter is 50-50 for all teams and the same applies to determining the identity of the winner between Al-Ahly and Sun Downs.”
“Sun Downs has a chance to win the title, but in all honesty, any team in the quarter-finals can win the title this season.”
“It is really an interesting competition because for the first time all the teams competing in the quarter-finals have won the title at least once,” he added.
“Mazembe can win, Al-Ahly as well, and Sun Downs has a chance, but it is difficult to know the identity of the winner of this tournament,” Carteron concluded.
It is noteworthy that Cartieron is preparing with Zamalek to meet Esperance next Friday at Cairo Stadium in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the tournament itself.
