The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has decided that the ranking of 3 × 3 basketball teams and players, which was previously “frozen” before April 1, will not change until April 1 next year, FIBA announced.
FIBA took this decision mainly in order not to affect the qualification process for the Tokyo Olympics.
FIBA has suspended the ranking of teams and players since April. On July 9, FIBA announced that the teams were allowed to participate in official tournaments, but this idea could not be implemented by several 3 × 3 basketball member states, which were forced to comply with the restrictions imposed due to the spread of Covid-19.
By “freezing” the ranking, FIBA will provide an opportunity for several teams to continue the fight for entry into the World Tour later. In turn, units and players who have participated in the official competition during this time will receive ranking points after April 1.
In the period from April 1 to September 30 of the following year, all players in the ranking will receive the points earned during the last year. Points earned in the 12-month period before the rank was “frozen” will also be added.
Starting from October 1 next year, the FIBA ranking system will return to the usual mode.
The first stage of the 3 × 3 World Tour season is scheduled for August 29-30 in the Hungarian city of Debrecen, followed by two Masters stages in the Romanian capital, Bucharest (September 5-6 and 11-12).
