In an international comparison, Austria has fallen four places to 15th place since the previous survey in 2018, shows the study Decoding Global Talent, for which BCG, StepStone and The Network surveyed 208,000 employees from 190 countries. Austria is particularly attractive for Hungarians, Slovenes, Serbs and Germans. Vienna as a city has dropped nine places to 22nd, New York from second to eighth. The most attractive city is now London, ahead of Amsterdam and Dubai. But if you only look at European job seekers, Vienna remains eighth of the most popular destinations.

In general, the corona pandemic has resulted in fewer people wanting to work abroad. In 2014, 64 percent of those surveyed wanted that, in 2018 57 percent and in 2020 only 50 percent. Canada is now the most popular destination country, no longer the USA. The winners also include Australia, which is now in third place ahead of Germany, and Asian countries. The pandemic also left its mark on this survey: Countries that fight the virus more quickly and efficiently have become more attractive and countries hard hit by the pandemic have lost them.
