Few workstations are compatible with Windows 11

A study conducted by Lansweeper shows that less than 45% of workstations have an incompatible CPU to switch to Windows 11. A more widespread problem than the absence of the TPM security module.

The migration to Windows 11 is far from a smooth river. For some it is even more like a Stations of the Cross. As we know, in view of the conditions imposed to switch to the latest version of the Microsoft OS, all system configurations will not be compatible. According to a study by Lansweeper, a provider of IT asset management solutions, 44.4% of workstations – out of a total of 30 million Windows terminals in more than 60,000 organizations surveyed – are unable to support Windows 11 because of their incompatible CPU.

It’s not just CPU concerns that can prevent businesses from migrating to Microsoft’s latest OS. The lack of a TPM security module is also a concern with less than 53% of eligible workstations knowing that in 28.2% of cases there is uncertainty about a possible version upgrade. To a much lesser extent, a lack of RAM can be blocking since 91.1% of systems have no difficulty in upgrading to Windows 11.

A rarely used TPM passthrough driver

“For virtualized workstations, the forecast is less optimistic. While processor compatibility is just over 44.9%, our research shows that only 66.4% have enough RAM, ”Lansweeper says. “Regarding TPM, only 0.23% of all virtual desktops have TPM 2.0 enabled. This is not entirely a surprise, this module has never been required for Windows and although TPM passthrough (vTPM) exists to give a TPM to virtual machines, it is rarely used. This means that most VM desktops will need to be modified to get vTPM before they can upgrade to Windows 11, ”says Lansweeper.

To migrate to Windows 11, the system configuration must consist of a 1 GHz multi-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage and support UEFI as well as Secure Boot as well as the TPM 2.0 chip. An – unofficial – script has been published to configure a workstation to bypass hardware compatibility checks.
