Felipe Melo vs Kyle Walker: Post-Match Chaos at FIFA Club World Cup Final

Right-back Walker, from Manchester City, made a post mocking the confusion with midfielder Felipe Melo, from Fluminense, after the FIFA Club World Cup final, at the Rei Abdullah Stadium, in Saudi Arabia.

“No one touches my Jack (Grealish),” said Walker, with emoticon of laughter. The caption follows below a photo of the confusion with the Brazilian athlete.

Former City player Riyad Mahrez responded. “(I’ll bet) my money on you, don’t let me down.”

Other players laughed at the post, such as Jordan Brian Henderson, formerly of Liverpool and currently at Al-Ettifaq, in Saudi Arabia, and Jérémy Doku, from City.

Confusion

At the final whistle of the World Cup match, Grealish and midfielder Martinelli, from Fluminense, argued. Felipe Melo then intervened and pushed the City player. Then, Walker entered the chaos, which only stopped with the help of other athletes and members of the two technical committees.

Asked about the “push and shove”, Felipe Melo argued that the person responsible for starting the “bullshit” was Grealish. The tricolor defender said that the Irishman shouted “olé”, in provocation for the defeat of Flu. Left-back Marcelo and striker Arias reiterate the version.

“That Grealish is disrespectful, do you understand? He plays for a national team, he’s a great player, but he’s disrespectful and started shouting ‘olé’ at the end. Of course, all of our players were angry. When the game ended, Grealish chose a smaller athlete and went after Martinelli. When he saw Felipe Melo arriving, he started to act like a victim”, said Felipe Melo.

In a relaxed atmosphere, City players – including Norwegian center forward Erling Haaland – “escorted” Grealish throughout the mixed zone, a space where journalists can interview the athletes. As a result, the Irishman did not speak to the press about the confusion.

He, however, tried to comment on the case through social media. At the Twitter, the winger wrote: “I didn’t say ‘olé’ once”. In another publication, he celebrated the title. “World champions. What a club!”
