Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) Outbreak in Cyprus: Cats at Risk of Death from Virus

JawaPos.com – Cats are one of the choices of the majority of people to raise animals. Not only because it’s cute, it’s unique and always wants to be pampered makes the owner feel like caring for a child.

But, what happens if the experts warn that where you live there will be many cats in danger of dying from a virus that infects these cute animals?

Quoted from Daily maila virus outbreak named feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) or feline coronavirus The outbreak in Cyprus has made this archipelagic nation a potential island of dead cats. This is after experts said that at least 300,000 cats had died from the plague, which is also called FCov.

Both feral and domestic cats have been killed by this disease. Since January, experts have been warning that many cats could die if the virus circulating in Cyprus reaches the UK.

“Local vets have reported an alarming increase in FIP cases, which started in the capital city of Nicosia in January and spread across the island within three to four months,” said Demetris Epaminondas, vice president of the Pancyprian Veterinary Association.

In a recent blog post, he added that the symptoms of FIP include fever, abdominal swelling, loss of energy, and sometimes making cats aggressive towards each other. This virus generally affects kittens and young cats.

Prof Danièlle Gunn-Moore, a specialist in feline medicine at the University of Edinburgh, told Telegraph that an epidemic of this magnitude had never been recorded in history. Increasing reports of cats dying on the streets have led to suspicions that this may be a new, more lethal strain of FIP. Tests are being carried out to confirm this.

He added that the local government has formed an advisory team, launched a media awareness campaign and is working to change the law to allow the use of the drug to treat cats. But stressed that no cat should leave the country without testing negative.

“There is already some evidence although it is still anecdotal. That this virus may already be present in Turkey, Lebanon and possibly in Israel. If this virus gets to the UK it could cause many of our cats to die. This would be heartbreaking. We must respond with Serious.”

“We have lost 300,000 cats since January [akibat FIP],” Dinos Ayiomamitis, head of Cats PAWS Cyprus and vice president of Cyprus Voice for Animals, told Agence France Presse. The island’s cat population is estimated at around one million.

He said that one of the challenges in counting cases was that, with so many feral cats living in Cyprus, diagnosing and documenting every infection was nearly impossible.

Dr Epaminondas said that, “The only way to stop this disease is with medical treatment”. But this also proved difficult.

Experts want to start using the two treatments in the cats, but bureaucratic and cost challenges have so far hindered progress.

If your cat exhibits symptoms such as fever, abdominal swelling, loss of energy, and sometimes even aggressive behavior, experts recommend taking him to the vet immediately. Kittens and those under two years of age are most at risk.

In the UK, the antiviral used to treat the Corona virus is remdesivir. The drug closely related to GS-441524 has also been approved for use in cats with FIP.

The vet says the “gold standard” of treatment is an infusion of remdesivir for three to four days, followed by injections of the drug for up to two weeks. Oral GS-441524 is then used to prevent recurrence of the disease. The total course of treatment takes about 12 weeks.
