FDP Urges Education Minister Karin Prien to Take Action on Education Challenges in Schleswig-Holstein

Kiel (dpa / lno) – The FDP sees Schleswig-Holstein’s Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) under strong pressure to act. The head of department must make significant corrections after the parliamentary summer break, said Christopher Vogt, head of the state parliamentary group, to the German Press Agency. Prien has been Minister of Education for over six years. “You can no longer pretend that you can’t do anything about the many problems and large construction sites that are idle.” One of the biggest challenges is the shortage of skilled workers in schools.

The countermeasures initiated by Prien were by no means sufficient to even begin to get the problem under control, said Vogt. “Therefore, the third package of measures must come much earlier than announced by the minister and finally be a big hit.” The FDP also believes that the teaching degree should be more practical, the traineeship more attractive and lateral and lateral entry into the teaching profession easier.

The FDP proposes the establishment of a dual teaching degree, which should also be offered at the Lübeck location, especially for subjects with a shortage, such as computer science. From the point of view of the FDP, teachers must be relieved of non-teaching tasks much more and better supported by more school social work with inclusion and integration.

“The state-wide measures for all-day expansion must be pushed forward with much more commitment by the state government, because the legal entitlement to all-day care in elementary schools will start as early as 2026,” said Vogt. “If the education minister doesn’t finally pick up the pace here, it won’t be possible to guarantee this everywhere.” This would undermine trust in the state and put a strain on the work-life balance.

In view of the large deficits of many elementary school students in the core competencies of reading, arithmetic and writing, the FDP proposes an elementary school offensive. The aim is to further increase the number of lessons in the core subjects and to implement further support measures, such as those that have long existed in Hamburg, across the board in Schleswig-Holstein. With a view to the shortage of skilled workers, the FDP is also calling for more commitment to strengthening vocational training. This applies in particular to rural areas, where many offers are threatened in view of the falling number of students.
