FC Barcelona caught up with Real Madrid in the title fight for the Spanish championship. The Catalans prevailed 2-1 at Villarreal FC on Sunday thanks to a brace from French World Champion Antoine Griezmann. With that, the team around superstar Lionel Messi is six laps before the end of the season, level on points with Real in third place.
The “Royal” only maintain second place thanks to the direct comparison they have won, and Barca have played one game less than Real. League leaders Atletico Madrid can extend their lead against Athletic Bilbao to five points late on Sunday evening.
Against Seventh Villarreal, Barça initially fell behind with a goal from Samu Chukwueze (26th minute). Only a few minutes later, however, coach Ronald Koeman’s team turned the game around with a brace from Griezmann (28th, 35th). From the 65th minute, the guests played after a red card against Manu Trigueros after a brutal foul against Messi in the majority. The Argentine was able to continue playing after a short break in treatment.
