This afternoon a fatal industrial accident happened on the site of the former sugar factory in Veurne. The 35-year-old Polish driver who was driving a large dumper with soil suddenly tipped over and ended up in the water of the reservoir.

The tragic accident at the site of the Suikerpark on Nijverheidsstraat happened around 1 pm. A driver driving a dumper right next to the reservoir suddenly dived into the water. The colossus tilted and ended up in the water on its roof. Bystanders immediately called emergency services. The fire brigade arrived with divers but it took a while before the driver could be found. A MUG team and an ambulance were waiting on the scene. “Unfortunately, the accident was fatal,” says Commissioner Jorik Debruyne of the Spoorkin police zone. “When the driver could be picked up, he turned out to be dead. The driver could also no longer be resuscitated. The circumstances of the accident are currently being investigated. ”
The victim is a 35-year-old man of Polish nationality. “The driver may have made a steering error.”
Road works
On the former site of the Sugar Factory, there is currently a lot of activity on the 49 hectare site. The sugar factory closed in 2005 and will be reallocated. Among other things, a completely new residential area is being constructed with two residential towers. There will be 450 new homes on the site. There are also a lot of sewerage and road works. It may be that things went wrong with those works. The police are conducting further investigations and the labor prosecutor may also be notified, as it concerns an industrial accident.
