NEW YORK — At least two people died Monday in a house fire in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, fire officials said.
A call about the 46th Street house fire, with reports of people trapped, came in just after 2 p.m. The flames were under control in about an hour, but the devastation had already been wrought.
A second-story window of the two-story building was found totally destroyed by the fire, a charred streak stretching from the cracked frame to the ceiling, which also appeared to have sustained extensive fire damage.
A large number of firefighters and fire trucks blocked the street in front. More than 100 FDNY personnel responded.
No details were immediately available about the victims or a possible cause of the fire.
It is the second high-impact fire in Astoria in a matter of weeks. Late last month, five firefighters and one civilian were injured when a fire broke out at a warehouse on 31st Street, near 34th and 35th avenues.
