A 47-year-old man from Galati County died after being attacked and bitten on the neck by an Amstaff dog. He took care of the animals while the neighbors were away from home. His niece, a 14-year-old girl, was bitten on the hand, but managed to save herself.

The Galaţi Police was notified by calling 112, on Sunday, at 8:28 p.m., by a 50-year-old man, regarding the fact that in the yard of a building in the village of Roșcani, Băneasa commune, Galați county, he is lying , at ground level unconscious, his brother, a 47-year-old man, and cannot be reached because of an aggressive dog.
Police officers from Section 5 of the Rădești Rural Police and a medical team from the Ambulance arrived at the scene in a short time, and found that what was reported was confirmed.
The policemen entered the yard of that building and only after using irritating tear gas spray, acting in the direction of the Amstaff dog, did they manage to reach the man who had fallen to the ground.
“They transported the victim outside the yard to the medical team, but unfortunately death was confirmed, the man having a bite wound on the neck. Also, until the police arrived, a 14-year-old minor, the deceased person’s niece, was bitten on the left hand by the same dog when she tried to reach her uncle, then managed to get out of the yard”, announced IPJ Galati.
The man was not allowed to let the dog loose
From the preliminary checks carried out by the police, it was established that the owner of the building and the dog, for about three years, had left the household and the task of feeding the animals he owns in the care of the 47-year-old man, while he was away from home at work.
The Amstaff dog was locked in a specially made pen, and the owner told the keeper not to open it and let him loose in the yard.
On Sunday, July 16, 2023, the victim went to feed the animals at around 17:00 and, as he had not returned to his home, at around 20:20, his brother and his niece went to see what was happening.
During the night of July 16/17, 2023, the owner of the building also returned to the address, and the dog remained in his custody until the situation and the conditions of possession were clarified.
“In the case, a criminal file was opened under the aspect of committing the crime regarding the regime of possession of dangerous or aggressive dogs, according to art. 12 paragraph 1, of GEO 55/2002, of the crime of manslaughter, respectively culpable bodily injury. The investigations are being continued by the police under the coordination of the case prosecutor from the Public Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Târgu Bujor Court, in order to accurately establish the circumstances in which this event occurred”, Galati Police reported.
