A swarm of particularly aggressive bees attacked swimmers in French Guiana on Tuesday August 22. A woman died from the bites.
Have tourists been attacked by killer bees in Guyana? The incident occurred Tuesday, August 22, off Cayenne. When swimming, visitors are violently attacked by a swarm of several thousand insects. “I saw that all the people who were bathing, who were on the beach, were starting to scream (…). We saw people covered in bites, who had stings all over their faces”says a witness.

The emergency services intervened quickly, but a 65-year-old woman died of the bites and several people are still in absolute emergency. This attack is extremely rare and surprised the firefighters. “The second exception is to have a swarm that is aggressive“, explains Lieutenant-Colonel Eric Batany, head of the SDIS Guyana operational group. The insects at the origin of the attack would be Africanized bees, a cross between the European and African species.
