A cyclist was run over and killed by a truck in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen. The accident occurred on Monday afternoon around 2:00 p.m. on the bike path on the corner of Rhinstrasse and Landsberger Allee, the police said. The cyclist, whose age has not yet been announced, drove towards the cosmonaut avenue. Beside him, a 49-year-old truck driver was traveling in the same direction. The truck turned right onto Landsberger Allee, caught the cyclist and overrun him, according to the police. The cyclist died at the scene of the accident.

Cyclists killed: vigil on Tuesday

The Changing Cities association, which campaigns for a turnaround in traffic, called for a vigil at the scene of the accident in the late Tuesday afternoon. Because of the corona pandemic, 50 participants are allowed to gather.

Cyclists are repeatedly killed or seriously injured by turning trucks. Several people have already died this way in Berlin this year. Since the new road traffic regulations came into force at the end of April, lorries are only allowed to drive at right speed in urban areas when turning right.

Cyclist falls and breaks his neck

According to police statistics, 22 people were killed in traffic by 14 May in Berlin: seven pedestrians, six cyclists, five motorcyclists or scooters, two car occupants and two other road users.

A cyclist died on Sunday, when he drove downhill from a mountain in Volkspark Friedrichshain, fell and broke his neck. It was still unclear whether he was counted as a traffic death in the statistics.

In the first quarter of this year, from January 1 to March 31, 18 people died in Berlin traffic. After that, the numbers went down, probably also because there were significantly fewer pedestrians, cyclists and cars on the streets due to the Corona crisis. Last year 40 people were killed in traffic accidents. Pedestrians were the largest group (24).
