Fastest cash register in the world? How Aldi cashiers save crucial seconds

Another decisive factor: Aldi employees learn early on not to be distracted when checking out – a decisive factor for high efficiency.

Unlike many retail competitors, Aldi cashiers often do without detailed greetings – even eye contact is in many cases advised against cashiers, as a study by the cash register barometer from 2009 shows (via: Business insider). In 27 of 30 Aldi branches examined, employees avoided looking the customer directly in the eye. A checkout process took between 20 and 25 seconds on average in the checkout process – around 17 seconds faster than the best competitor.-

Technical progress has also proven to be extremely helpful for efficiency at the checkout: Before the scanner technology was introduced, the Aldi cashiers had to memorize all item prices and type them in by hand – Aldi saves money by simply “pulling over the checkout” South and north valuable time. For fruit / vegetables and baked goods, cashiers still have to be able to memorize the three- to six-digit key figures – but this is no different with the competition from Lidl, Rewe and Co.

In addition, loyalty campaigns, lots and the like are a rarity at Aldi – after all, these take a few extra seconds or even minutes for each customer until the loyalty points have been asked for and then have to be counted and handed over.

It is clear that Aldi Süd and Nord have always placed a lot more value on speed and efficiency at the checkout. The numbers show: Customers seem to have absolutely no problems with this attitude.-
