As of: January 29, 2024 11:06 a.m

Numerous farmers are protesting in Hamburg today against the federal government’s policies. Hundreds of tractors are on the road in the Hanseatic city, causing traffic disruptions.

The police assume that a total of around 1,500 tractors and other vehicles are taking part in the protests. She called on drivers to avoid the urban area. The farmers’ protests caused disruptions to rush-hour traffic in several places that morning. Traffic around the Köhlbrand Bridge was temporarily paralyzed, as a police spokesman told NDR 90.3. The intersection around Finkenwerder Strasse was blocked. Because of the tractors, traffic was backed up on many routes.

The destination of the farmers, who drove in a star shape towards the city center along five main routes, was Theodor-Heuss-Platz at Dammtor train station, where there was a rally in the morning. Tractor after tractor lined up in the streets surrounding the venue. The motto of the demonstration is “Against tax and bureaucracy madness”. Farmer Hannah Timmermann from Hamburg-Sülldorf told NDR 90.3 about the demands: “The excessive bureaucracy should be reduced.” In addition, the subsidy for agricultural diesel must be maintained. She also criticized planned set-asides. She emphasized that it was about clear demands in agricultural policy and that she distanced herself from extremism.

At midday the tractors drive out of town again towards Marmstorf, Rahlstedt, Bergedorf, Lurup and Rissen. The protest trips are expected to last until around 3 p.m.
