Sheep farmer and farmer foreman Bart Kemp found thirteen dead and two injured sheep this morning on one of his pastures near Otterlo. Kemp speaks of “a battlefield”. He assumes a wolf is the culprit.

It is the fourth time in a short time that Kemp has found dead sheep on his land. “At this rate, professional sheep farming will no longer exist in five years,” says Kemp Omroep Gelderland. “It’s getting out of hand.”

Kemp, known for his work as a foreman of Agractie, received a call early this morning from his neighbor that something was wrong. On the way to his pasture he called a vet and the wolf experts from BIJ12.

Hole under electric fence

On his land, the sheep farmer found the flock of 42 sheep, thirteen of which did not survive the attack and two were seriously injured. At the edge of his pasture, the farmer saw a clear digging track that went under an electric fence. “And after that digging, the violence against my sheep started,” Kemp said.

An appraiser from BIJ12 then went directly to Otterlo. “We are taking DNA samples and analyzing the bite wounds to see if it was indeed a wolf,” said a spokesperson for the organization. “We prefer to do that immediately, even during the weekend. Because then the tracks are fresh.”

Perspective

If it is indeed an attack by a wolf, it is the fourth time at Kemp since November 7. He lost at least 25 sheep in total. Like any farmer who experiences a wolf attack, Kemp receives compensation for his sheep killed.

He now calls such compensation “irrelevant”. He says he mainly wants the government to offer prospects for the future of sheep farming in the Netherlands.
