Farmacias Benavides: Providing HPV Vaccines to Prevent Cervical and Prostate Cancer in Mexico

Farmacias Benavides, the company committed to providing comprehensive health and wellness solutions to Mexicans for 105 years, makes available to its clients vaccines against the Human Papilloma Virus, available in 63 offices distributed in Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Jalisco, Nuevo León and Querétaro.

According to the Pan American Health Organization, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted virus that especially infects the oral mucosa and genital mucosa. It is an infection in the reproductive system that can occur in both men and women and is currently one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the world; some people may even have recurrent infections.

The National Institute for Women estimates that in Mexico up to 80% of the population is infected with the virus, while recent studies indicate that 90% of Mexican women have had HPV at some time in their lives, considered one of the main factors for developing cervical cancer, in the case of women, and prostate cancer in men, being the second cause of death in women.

On many occasions HPV may not cause health problems, however, viruses 16 and 18 cause almost 70% of cases of cervical cancer while types 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts. In this sense, the average mortality rate in the region due to Human Papilloma Virus was located at 18.24%, placing Mexico in the first places internationally. For this reason, it is recommended that women ages 30 to 49 get one of 3 types of cervical cancer screening tests at least once in their lifetime:

Conventional (papanicolaou) and liquid cytology (LBC) Visual inspection with acetic acid (VAT) Detection of the presence of high-risk HPV types (such as 16 and 18)

Currently, there are vaccines available that help prevent infection with some types of HPV and some of the forms of cancer that are related to these types of viruses. In this sense, Farmacias Benavides makes HPV vaccines available to Mexican families.

The doctor. Arturo Arriaga, manager of medical offices at Farmacias Benavides, commented: “Vaccination against the Human Papilloma Virus is a health priority, for which we want to safeguard the safety and well-being of the population by providing HPV vaccines. These actions are part of our efforts to amplify the conversation on the subject and bring comprehensive health solutions to our clients.”

Early treatment of precancerous lesions can prevent most cervical cancers. In addition, it is suggested to apply the HPV vaccine before starting a sexual life so that in the future sexual activity can be maintained safely. At a later stage, some test should be done to detect cervical cancer, the important thing is to stay informed.

Farmacias Benavides seeks to strengthen the health offer in Mexico through timely monitoring of clinical history and availability of vaccines against different diseases. Helping Mexicans to have an early diagnosis of these pathologies will help prevent possible diseases.
