In the German city of Leipzig, demonstrators and the police clashed on Saturday during the far-left protest day Tag X. Stones and fireworks were thrown at the police, among other things. There were also riots on Friday. 23 officers were slightly injured and 25 vehicles were set on fire.
Throughout Germany, people were called upon in left-wing circles to participate in Tag X. The reason was the conviction of the left-wing extremist Lina E. and three others. They were convicted on Wednesday of attacks on alleged or actual neo-Nazis, in which several people were injured.
According to the police, about 1,500 people took part in the demonstration on Alexis-Schumann-Platz in Leipzig. Another demonstration was previously banned by the municipality, after which protests against that decision were announced and allowed.
The protest rally at Alexis-Schumann-Platz was ended by the organization early in the evening. However, the atmosphere remained restless even after that.
Anger about earlier demonstration ban
On Friday evening there were riots in Leipzig after anger about the earlier demonstration ban. According to the police, 23 officers were slightly injured and 25 vehicles were set on fire. To prevent more unrest on Saturday, police officers from twelve states were deployed.
Lina E. was sentenced to five years and three months in prison, but is allowed to go home for the time being. She had been in pretrial detention for 2.5 years before the verdict. According to the court, it is partly due to E.’s health that she can now go home for a while. She has to report to the police twice a week.
